About the Gastric Sleeve

The gastric sleeve (also called sleeve gastrectomy) is a minimally invasive bariatric procedure that permanently removes approximately 75–80% of the stomach. What remains is a narrow, tube-shaped "sleeve" roughly the size of a banana.

Because the portion of the stomach that produces ghrelin — the hunger hormone — is removed, most patients notice a dramatic reduction in appetite almost immediately after surgery. This makes long-term lifestyle changes feel far more achievable.

The procedure is performed laparoscopically through 3–5 small incisions, resulting in minimal scarring, less pain than open surgery, and a significantly faster recovery. No foreign devices are implanted and the digestive tract is not rerouted.

At BajaMedLife, your gastric sleeve is performed by Dr. Elias Garcia and Dr. Antonio Garcia at MAC Hospitales in Mexicali — one of the most experienced bariatric teams in Baja California, steps from the US border.

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have a BMI of 35 or above
  • Have obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, or high blood pressure
  • Have tried diet and exercise without sustained success
  • Are committed to long-term dietary and lifestyle changes
  • Are between 18–65 years old and in generally good health
  • Do not want foreign devices implanted in your body
  • Want a permanent, highly effective weight loss solution

How It Works — Step by Step

The procedure takes approximately 45–90 minutes and is performed entirely laparoscopically under general anesthesia.

1

General Anesthesia

A board-certified anesthesiologist puts you fully under. Your vitals are monitored continuously throughout the procedure.

2

Laparoscopic Access

3–5 small incisions (5–12mm) are made in the abdomen. A high-definition camera and thin instruments are inserted, allowing the surgeon to see and operate inside the abdomen with precision.

3

Stomach Reduction

Approximately 75–80% of the stomach is carefully removed along the greater curvature, including the fundus — the section that produces the hunger hormone ghrelin.

4

Stapling & Leak Test

The remaining stomach sleeve is sealed with surgical staples. The surgeon performs a leak test by introducing a dye or air to verify the integrity of the staple line before closure.

5

Closure & Recovery

The small incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue. You are moved to a private recovery room at MAC Hospitales for monitoring. Most patients go home — or to their recovery hotel — after 1–2 nights.

Gastric Sleeve FAQ

No — the gastric sleeve is a permanent procedure. The removed portion of the stomach cannot be restored. However, this is actually part of why it works so well long-term: the fundus (the section that produces ghrelin, the hunger hormone) is permanently removed, which significantly reduces appetite and makes the lifestyle changes much easier to sustain.
Most patients lose 60–70% of their excess body weight within the first 12–18 months after surgery. Results vary based on starting weight, adherence to post-op dietary guidelines, and individual metabolism. Many patients also see improvement or full resolution of obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea.
You will follow a progressive diet: liquids for the first 1–2 weeks, puréed foods for weeks 3–4, soft foods through week 6, and then normal foods in small portions from week 7 onward. Long-term, you will eat significantly smaller meals. Carbonated drinks, high-sugar foods, and alcohol should be avoided or minimized permanently.
Most patients stay a total of 3–4 nights: 1–2 nights in the hospital followed by 1–2 nights in your recovery hotel. The majority of BajaMedLife patients cross back into the US within 4 days of surgery. Sergio coordinates everything so the logistics are completely handled — you just focus on recovering.
